Entirely renovated in 2019, the refuge of the Vanoise pass (or Félix Faure refuge), managed by Gérard Girod for many years, is a modern refuge, of High Environmental Quality. During the guarded period, from the beginning of March to the end of September, Gérard Girod will cook for you with organic and local products... possibly washed down with organic Savoie wines. Possibility to go to the refuge the rest of the year under reservation via the website of the French Federation of Alpine and Mountain Clubs.
Set amidst alpine meadows, at the foot of the Grande Casse (3,855 m) - the highest peak in the Parc de la Vanoise and the Savoie department - and the Vanoise ice cap (the largest in France), the Col de la Vanoise refuge is a historic crossroads between the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys. It's a perfect stop-off point for mountaineering and ski touring, as well as for long-distance hiking and roaming. Summer access is easy from Pralognan-la-Vanoise (Les Fontanettes parking lot), in around 1H30 to 2H, via Lac des Vaches. In winter, you can use the Barmettes chairlift, which takes you up to 2,000 m.
