The Col du Sabion is a site known since antiquity. This itinerary will allow you to discover the history of this passage used for thousands of years and to observe, at a glance, the Mount Bego and the valleys of Fontanalbe and Valmasque.
The Sabion Pass has been one of the most important crossings since the Neolithic period, when prehistoric men drove their cattle on the slopes of the Valle delle Merveilles.
It is also part of the defensive system of the Vallo Alpino. This system of fortifications, built by the Italians in the 1930s, is a testimony of an architecture aimed at military defense, in a very difficult period of history for Europe.
The itinerary begins at the Baisse de Peyrefique and continues along a panoramic path of great beauty. It allows you to discover, at a glance, the Mont Bego and the valleys of Fontanalbe and Valmasque, important archaeological sites. The crossed environments are also extremely interesting for the birds as the rock blackbird, the ortolan bunting, the pipit rousseline, species sometimes rare and localized in the valley of Roya.
